Canada’s Wicked Health Workforce Crisis: Building Workforce Capacity to Right-Size Health Systems for Children and Youth

The highly specialized healthcare workforce serving children and youth is foundational to the system’s capacity to deliver timely, equitable, and appropriate access to care for kids. From coast to coast to coast and across the continuum of care, while the numbers of new healthcare professionals entering the workforce and the population (and health complexity) of children and youth in Canada are increasing, health workforce capacity is decreasing (e.g., due to reduced hours worked). Further, Canada’s health workforce has been deeply impacted by systemic challenges that have resulted in elevated rates of burnout, attrition, reduced workplace satisfaction, and increased workload. The path forward is complex and will require coordinated pan-Canadian planning efforts, giving consideration to available and required data, how we build a more diverse workforce, and how we account for evolving models of care.
