Medical Student
Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Emma Haraga is a third-year medical student at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. Originally from British Columbia, she moved to a rural town in Newfoundland, named Salmon Cove, where she began to have an interest in rural medicine. She completed her BSc (Honours) at MUN with her research focus on gut health and recovery in the neonate population after total parenteral nutrition. Emma began medical school at MUN Medicine in 2021, pursuing interests in pediatrics and rural medicine throughout her training. Currently, she is doing research for the implementation of quality improvement initiatives to improve respiratory outcomes in extremely premature infants, under the mentorship and guidance of Dr. Jo-Anna Hudson, Neonatologist, and Darlene Toope, NICU Research Nurse Coordinator. Together, the team created and implemented a new protocol for the use of Hydrocortisone in low doses to improve lung outcomes in extremely preterm infants in Newfoundland and Labrador.
